Becoming an actor/actress is the new top career choice among Malaysian children aged seven to 14 years, according to a survey conducted by Adecco Malaysia.

According to its statement, 12 per cent of the children said they wanted to become an actor/actress when they grew up as they were keen to make a name for themselves in the entertainment industry.

Those surveyed had monthly salary expectations ranging from RM100 to RM1,000,000.

Alma Othman, general manager of Adecco Malaysia, a subsidiary of the world's largest HR organisation, said the objective of the survey was to learn more about children's career aspirations and thoughts about the future.

"The findings also revealed that 88 per cent of the children surveyed believe that it is more important to 'spend time with family' than 'in making lots of money'," she said in the statement, issued today.

In the same survey in 2012, being a doctor was the top career choice among children in this country.

Becoming a teacher was again popular (in second place) with 11 per cent of over 100 children in the Klang Valley, Penang, Johor Baru and Melaka surveyed from mid-November to December last year, wanting to pursue a career in teaching.

Several questions were asked in the survey, that included:

What do you want to be when you grow up?
Why have you chosen this and how much do you expect to earn?
What is the best/coolest job that you can think of?
What is more important: to make lots of money or to spend time with your family?

On the preferred jobs/posts, doctor was in third place, followed by model and restaurant owner/chef.

The children were also asked the first three things they would do if they become prime minister.

The responses ranged from having policemen protect everyone at the shopping centres and roads, providing toys and games for the poor, helping the less fortunate to providing assistance, support and housing for the elderly.
