Government committed to helping Indians: Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Oct 19 (PTI) Seeking to address the concerns of ethnic Indians alleging racial discrimination, the Malaysian government today said it was committed to helping the community in terms of employment, education and business opportunities.

The Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Mohd Najib Razak who chaired the Cabinet Committee for Indian Affairs had asked the Public Services Department to increase the intake of Indians in government departments and agencies, second Finance Minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop said in Butterworth.

"He has also asked the relevant bodies to ensure that scholarships are given fairly to deserving Indian students," after presenting Diwali goodies to the needy in Pokok Machang today, the Daily Star reported today.

Earlier, deputy state Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) chairman PK Subbaiyah had appealed to Nor Mohamed to do more for the Indian community in Penang whom he said still lagged in education excellence and business opportunities.

On November 25, last year ethnic Indians staged street protest alleging marginalisation of the community in Malaysia. More than 20,000 people attended the rally, which was branded as illegal by the government.

Hindu Rights Action Force (hindraf) which was on the forefront of the agitation was banned on October 15, which advocated equal rights for the ethnic Indians, branding it as a threat to national security.

Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar had issued a statement declaring Hindraf, which has been advocating ethnic Indian rights since late last year for the minority community, an illegal organisation. PTI
